Delhi Metro Daily Earnings

Delhi Metro is a metro system serving New Delhi, Noida, Gurgaon, Faridabad and Ghaziabad. The project became live on December 24, 2002. There are over 216 Metro Trains running in Delhi-NCR and million of people travel on daily basis. Have you ever wondered how much DMRC earns in a day? How much revenue do they generate? These figures are really very high.

Recently, I was standing at Central Secretariat Metro station with one of my friends. We had to go to Huda City center in Gurgaon. All the metros that were running on that route were over crowded that day so we decided to wait for few minutes. While, we were waiting, we started doing some calculations.

METRO passed after every 5 minutes which had 6 or 8 metro coaches. Each coach has leg room for 80-130 passengers. But on a busy day there can be more than 130 passengers in each coach. Assuming that metro with 6 coaches and metro with 8 coaches came alternatively and on an average there are 150 passengers in a coach, then :-

Average Coaches : 6+8 = 14/2 = 7
Total Passengers in a train : 7 x 150 = 1,050
Total Train in 1 Hour : 60 min / 4 min = 15 trains in an hour.
The station has 2 platforms : 15 trains x 2 = 30 trains (in one hour)
Total Passengers travelling :  30 x 1050 = 31,500 (one hour)

Metro runs from 5:30 am to 12 pm
Total Hours : 18.5 hrs

Total Passengers travelling :  31,500 x 18.5 = 5,82,750 (eighteen hours)

Minimum Fare : Rupees 8
Maximum Fare : Rupees 50
Average Fare : Rupees 29

Total Revenue : 29 x 582750 = 1,68,99,750 (approx 1.6 cr)

Note : All the above calculations are just my approximations.

Let us now verify my results with the help of very famous newspaper The Hindu. According to the report of the newspaper :
